It is almost time to say farewell to all those typos and errors that have been bothering you so much: Twitter is adding a new feature, and it is a good one. The social networking service is beginning to test the much-anticipated edit button that should allow users to change their tweets after those have been posted. The new functionality, when it is implemented, will likely enable users to make needed changes to their existing tweets, such as correct the spelling or remove grammar mistakes, without risking the loss of any likes, retweets, and comments they have already received.
Announcing the new feature, Jay Sullivan, Twitter's head of consumer product, said the company had been contemplating the idea for quite some time and searching for ways to implement the much-requested functionality in such a manner that it did not compromise the integrity of public conversation on the platform. The main concern is that an editing tool – if not counterbalanced with all the right time limits and controls – could enable users to alter the meaning of a tweet after it gets widely shared.
Instead of rolling out the feature to everyone, like the platform has done with some other functionality in the past, the company says it will test the Edit button among its Twitter Blue subscribers first to see what works and what can be further improved. Even though Twitter denies that the work on the edit button started in response to the poll recently created by Elon Musk, the company's second-largest shareholder, we all know whom we should thank.
What do you think of Twitter’s plans to add an edit button? What other features do you think the platform needs to implement? Feel free to speak up in the comments section below, and do not forget to share this post with others!
