The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 campaign, which was canceled because Treyarch could not meet the deadline and thus endangered the game’s entire annual release schedule, recently got a massive leak that uncovered many juicy details we were to see if the feature hadn’t been dropped.
The 2018 CoD: Black Ops 4 was the first and so far the only entry in the franchise that did not have a campaign and instead offered the fans the Blackout battle royale mode and three ready-to-play zombie maps. Now four years later, thanks to a Reddit user named Purpletoaster20, we finally get to learn what could have been in the campaign if the developer had not canceled it abruptly.
The action of the canceled campaign was supposed to take place in 2070 in the chaos-ridden post-pandemic world torn apart by multiple climate disasters. The gameplay was to be quite curious, too: two teams of players that represented conflicting fractions would have had to compete against each other in completing missions and fighting AI until they finally clashed in fierce PvP firefights. There was to be only one winner or two losing teams, and the campaign landscape would have changed from one mission to another based on how the player performed and which decisions they made in the game.
The campaign was likely supposed to be a 2v2 race where opposing teams could have done things to prevent their rivals from completing missions first. The campaign was also to feature an exciting range of vehicles (some were later re-purposed for the Blackout battle royale mode) and companions with special abilities tied to specific fractions.
